WhatsApp support is going away for some older iPhones, OS update required for others

Apple’s iPhones last so long that losing support for one is always noteworthy. WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app, is about to do just that. A few iPhone models are outright losing support for the app, while others will require a software update.

The folks from WABetaInfo have found a warning message from the app, saying that WhatsApp won’t be supported on iOS 10 and iOS 11 devices after 24 October this year. That’s plenty of notice, if you’re using an older phone and have yet to update to iOS 12 or better.

WhatsApp with upgrades

Now, generally, this means you have to upgrade your iPhone’s operating system to the minimum requirement. Indeed, that’s exactly what you’ll have to do if you’re using anything newer than an iPhone 5S and still aren’t running iOS 12.

But if you’re using an iPhone 5 or an iPhone 5C — the youngest of which is nine years old — then it’s time for an upgrade. That’s because those phones aren’t supported by iOS 12. If we were talking about nine-year-old Android phones losing WhatsApp support, this wouldn’t be an issue. Very few people are using an HTC One, a Samsung Galaxy S4, or an LG G2. But an iPhone 5 and 5C? We can totally believe that there are still a few of those knocking about.

So, long story short, if you’re using an older iPhone and want to keep using WhatsApp, you’ve got about five months to a) upgrade your OS or b) upgrade your phone. The clock is ticking.
