Unusual method by Walter
Hamburger SV sends footballers in the cage

Hamburger SV is preparing for the final spurt in the 2nd Bundesliga with an unusual unit. Coach Tim Walter sends his trembling soccer players to martial arts. In the remaining three games it is important to defend the relegation place.

Martial arts cage instead of grass – it was a special kind of duel training that trainer Tim Walter prescribed for the Hamburger SV professionals in the middle of the final sprint for promotion. In an ultimate fighting gym in the Hanseatic city, the stumbling favorite prepared for an unpleasant game at Jahn Regensburg with sweaty kickboxing exercises – HSV wants to defend at least third place vehemently.

“We have everything in our own hands,” said Walter, with the relegation in mind, which would only be a little cheered consolation prize for HSV. There is also a small chance of a late lucky punch from the Rothosen, i.e. direct promotion, three games before the end of the 2nd division season. But 1. FC Heidenheim would have to run out of breath with a four-point lead – and Walter’s team first has to do its own duties on Sunday in the Upper Palatinate (1.30 p.m. / Sky).

“This is how the will to fight is awakened to a certain extent”

Walter believes his team is ready for this, also thanks to the unusual Wednesday session. “It was a great experience, and that also aroused a bit of the will to fight,” he said. “We enjoyed it very much.” Regensburg also wants to show great commitment after the change of coach to Joe Enochs and maintain the chance of staying up in the league – HSV can’t afford any more slip-ups.

Because it is still possible to gamble away everything that coach Walter and sports director Jonas Boldt could hardly justify. “For Walter, it’s about the future,” was the headline in “Kicker”. FC St. Pauli and Fortuna Düsseldorf, who are going head-to-head on Saturday night, are still within striking distance with a four-point deficit.

“Chance to appear in HSV’s rear-view mirror”

“Both teams have the chance to appear in HSV’s rearview mirror,” said Fortuna coach Daniel Thioune. In 2021 he failed in the task of leading the former Bundesliga Dino from Hamburg back to the elite class. After an interlude with Horst Hrubesch, Walter became his successor and was relegated last year, in which he failed at Hertha BSC.

Now the extra round in the direction of the first league is again the most realistic scenario, a mixed second half of the season brought Walter and Co. a better starting position. And in the far north it once again raises the question of whether the sporting leadership is properly cast for the long-planned farewell to the unloved Bundesliga lower house. It’s Walter’s job to come up with a convincing answer.
