Twitter is reportedly working on a new feature that will automatically detect abusive content and users block them from users’ accounts. According to Endgadget, the social media Goliath showed off the feature in a pair of screenshots in its  2021 Analyst Day presentation. The feature will go as far as to, “…mute accounts that might be using insults, name-calling, strong language, or hateful remarks.” reports Endgadget. The feature will restrict an offending user’s ability to tweet at you for a week and also curb your exposure to their replies on other tweets.

Neither a date of implementation nor much else was revealed.

Twitter is keeping things tidy

Its a poignant feature to be added. Twitter seems to be trying to clean up its content as it has undoubtedly been a major convening point for both outrage and misinformation spreading. Not that its the only platform for this, but its a big one. Alongside implementing algorithms to detect abusive tweets before users have to flag them, Twitter is also developing systems like Birdwatch to mitigate the spread of misinformation. Whether this new safety feature will help clean up abusive content on Twitter or just let people block things they don’t like to see from getting to them remains to be seen.
