The singer and presenter of the longtime SR-Program “No beautiful country”, Günter Wewel, is dead. He died on Tuesday at the age of 88.

For almost 20 years, the opera singer and interpreter of folk songs Günter Wewel stood in front of the camera for Saarland Radio. From 1989 to 2007, he hosted more than 150 episodes of the folk music and travel program “Kein Schöner Land”. Günter Wewel passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88. He fell asleep peacefully, the dpa news agency learned from his family environment.

“With Günter Wewel, a recognized opera voice, but also an extremely popular entertainer, is leaving the stage forever,” said SR director Martin Grasmück. “The Saarländisches Rundfunk owes him nationwide television success with its program ‘Kein Schöner Land’ and an entertainment program that is extremely popular with the audience on Erste and SR Fernsehen.”

Wewel was a fine, very pleasant and sociable person who will not be forgotten. “Saarland Radio will always honor Günter Wewel,” continued Grasmück.

Successful opera singer

Wewel comes from Arnsberg in Sauerland. After training with the Deutsche Bundesbahn, he studied classical music and opera in Dortmund. He then belonged to the ensemble of the Dortmund Opera for decades.

With his “basso profundo” he celebrated successes at numerous German and European houses. He also made a name for himself as an interpreter of folk songs and as a singer of ballads. Wewel, who was awarded the honorary title of Kammersänger, achieved nationwide fame through countless television appearances.

On the death of Günter Wewel, SR television changed its program for Friday evening and will broadcast a repeat of “Kein schöner Land – Capri” from 9 p.m.
