Fortuna puts everything in the promotion thriller against HSV

After HSV can’t win again, the Nordklub hopes for another relegation. But Fortuna Düsseldorf also wants to achieve that and is stalking it with a win against Kiel. In the meantime, Hansa Rostock is getting some air below – and making Regensburg suffer.

Hansa Rostock – Jahn Regensburg 2:0 (1:0)

Hansa Rostock celebrated a landmark victory in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga. The North Germans won the basement duel against table penultimate Jahn Regensburg 2-0 (1-0) and celebrated their third win in a row. With now 34 points, the Mecklenburgers improved to 13th place in the table.

Kai Pröger (34th) scored the opening goal for Rostock, Joker John Verhoek (79th) made everything clear. The Upper Palatinate remain at 28 points and more than ever have to fear relegation to the 3rd division. SSV Jahn has been without a win for six games and only scored two points in that time.

Both teams fought a battle of attrition, fighting for every meter. Many duels characterized the scenery. However, Rostock seemed a bit more mellow and purposeful in their actions. Regensburg fought back with great fighting spirit. In the 62nd minute, substitute Verhoek missed the great chance to make it 2-0. He didn’t hit the ball properly, so Regensburg goalkeeper Jonas Urbig didn’t face any major problems. But later he headed in and made it 2-0.

Karlsruher SC – Hannover 96 2: 1 (2: 1)

Karlsruher SC has moved past Lower Saxony to eighth place with a 2-1 (2-1) win against Hannover 96. Mikkel Kaufmann (4th) and Fabian Schleusener (11th) set the course for KSC’s victory early on. Austria’s Louis Schaub (43rd) scored the next goal, although there was a lot of luck involved. Because Schaub was shot by Marcel Franke in a defensive attempt, the ball sank over KSC keeper Marius Gersbeck into the goal of the hosts.

After the last two wins, the 96ers lost a game again, while the Badeners again scored three times after the last two bankruptcies. The guests never recovered from the rapid deficit, their build-up game was flawed and lacked esprit. Karlsruhe had the reins of action in their hands, set the pace and repeatedly set accents on the offensive. The Hanoverians only had their first chance after almost half an hour. Gersbeck parried a shot from Cedric Teuchert, Jannik Dehm put the follow-up shot over the opposing goal. In the 35th minute, Schleusener was saved by the well-reacting 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, who prevented the hosts from making it 3-0. Only after the connecting goal did the North Germans act more efficiently on the offensive, but without luck in the end.

Fortuna Dusseldorf – Holstein Kiel 3: 0 (3: 0)

Fortuna Düsseldorf has impressively preserved its remaining chances of promotion. The Rhinelanders won 3-0 (3-0) against Holstein Kiel and moved up four points to third-placed Hamburger SV. In the remaining three second division games, Fortuna must hope for more mistakes from the competition in order to be able to reach the relegation place.

The Kiel team, secured with 40 points, did not put up enough resistance in front of around 27,000 spectators in the Merkur Spiel-Arena. Shinta Appelkamp (15th), Andre Hoffmann (19th) and Daniel Ginczek (24th, penalty kick) made everything clear in the first half hour for Fortuna, who had not been defeated at home since November. Appelkamp used the first Fortuna chance to take the lead with a header, four minutes later Hoffmann also followed up with a header. Another four minutes later, Kiel’s veteran Fin Bartels brought down Emmanuel Iyoha in the sixteen, Ginczek converted confidently.

After that, Düsseldorf shifted down a gear, so that the guests also had dangerous opportunities. After Timo Becker hit the post, Lewis Holtby shot the rebound over the empty goal from six yards (44′). The game flattened out in the second half and Kiel remained inefficient.
