In the northern duel, Hamburger SV has the opportunity to conquer the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga – but that fails. SC Paderborn also failed in the promotion race and now fear falling behind. Fürth pushes past 1. FC Magdeburg in the fight to stay up.
Hamburger SV – Holstein Kiel 0-0
Hamburger SV has given up the chance of at least a provisional lead in the 2nd Bundesliga. With assistant coach Julian Hübner as deputy for their suspended head coach Tim Walter on the bench, the Hanseatic League did not get past a sobering number in the northern duel with Holstein Kiel, despite a long pressing superiority, and were therefore unable to displace 1. FC Heidenheim in front of the lead. On Saturday evening, HSV could fall behind the two direct promotion places at least for the international break if Darmstadt 98 drew against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
After his red card in the 4-2 defeat at Karlsruher SC a week ago, Walter witnessed his team’s futile fight for first place in a grandstand at the Volksparkstadion. The draw ended a successful series of five consecutive wins in front of a home crowd for Hamburg. The home side got into the game better and left no doubt as to their determination. The first expression of the clear field advantages was above all a chance for Rothosen through Bakery Jatta, which failed, however, due to guest keeper Robin Himmelmann.
After the initial phase, further scoring chances remained largely scarce for HSV despite their continued superiority. Only six minutes before the break did Ludovit Reis have another chance to take the lead from eight yards out, but again Himmelmann parried. Kiel, on the other hand, was hardly able to break free from the defensive effectively, but had a great chance in a relief attack in injury time in the first half by Lewis Holtby. However, HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes was on his toes.
In the second half, the 55,000 spectators saw much the same picture as before the break. The hosts continued to set the tone, but were unable to capitalize on this against the committed fighting storks. Either the increasingly hectic Hamburgers missed their few clear chances too easily or found their master in Himmelmann.
SpVgg Greuther Furth – 1. FC Magdeburg 3:0 (0:0)
SpVgg Greuther Fürth scored three important points in the basement duel against 1. FC Magdeburg. The cloverleaf won 3-0 (0-0) against FCM through Julian Green (64th), an own goal by Daniel Heber (69th) and another goal by Lukas Petkov (75th). In front of 11,619 fans, the Franconians were able to score three points again after three games without a win, while the Magdeburg’s winning streak came to an end. They had recently scored seven points from three games without defeat. Fürth now has 30 points, Magdeburg have scored 28 points so far.
Both teams tried to control the game, but neither team was able to develop clear optical advantages. The people of Fürth seemed a little unsettled after the recent failures, while the people of Saxony-Anhalt showed self-confidence based on the latest results. Ragnar Ache radiated most of the danger among the Fürthern, although he rarely managed to radiate real danger. However, Ache had his first chances in the fourth and 25th minute. Fürths Petkov (34′) probably had the best chance, but missed the ball free-standing.
The FCM acted self-disciplined and well organized. However, there was little going forward, Magdeburg did not get their first shot on goal until the 45th minute. In the second half, Fürth made the early decision with a double strike and a 2-0 lead. At 3:0, FCM keeper Dominik Reimann assisted with a big mistake.
SSV Jahn Regensburg – SC Paderborn 1:0 (0:0)
SC Paderborn’s hopes of promotion have received another severe setback. East Westphalia lost 0-1 (0-0) to relegation candidate Jahn Regensburg. Prince Osei Owusu (49th) scored the winning goal for the hosts with a penalty kick according to video evidence. In the 63rd minute, in front of 10,189 fans, Owusu missed the great chance to make it 2-0.
With 40 points, the Paderborn rank far behind the promotion ranks. After the 2-1 liberation at Holstein Kiel, SSV Jahn celebrated another three in the relegation battle. The Upper Palatinate left relegation place 16 and have 26 points on the account.
Both teams played a mixed game with many duels and only a few related actions. The SCP tried to control the game, but the hosts fought back with fighting power and the will to assert themselves. Both defensive rows determined the scenery and hardly allowed any chances. In the second half, the hosts seemed more determined and more dangerous in scoring. Paderborn was rarely able to provide relief.
