Last year, Google introduced a new way of sharing items between smartphones in the Android ecosystem called Nearby Share. It was initially meant for files, documents, photos, etc., and now its functionality has been extended with the ability to share apps and their updates directly through the Google Play Store.

To share apps, simply open up the Play Store and enter the “My apps & games” screen from the Menu at the left-edge. Navigate to the “Share” tab and from here you can choose to either send/receive an app to/from another Android smartphone.

When sending, select the app(s) you wish to share, select a receiver and click send. Both phones will show a code to authenticate the connection after which, the smartphone will automatically figure out the best way to transfer the app and its updates from the sender to the receiver.

On the receiver’s side, they can install each individual app or choose to install all received apps through Nearby Share.

The feature is quite useful for those individuals who don’t have access to reliable internet connections, and want to update their apps to the latest version. This is also another fast way for users to quickly load their smartphone with the apps that their friend has in their smartphone.

It will work with most apps on the Play Store except for those apps that are paid, were side loaded or those simply not publicly available. It will be available to all Android users with Google Play Store v24.0 and newer.
