Where is the 49 euro ticket valid?

From May 1st, the 49-euro ticket for local public transport in Germany will be valid on all regional train connections, trams, buses, underground and suburban trains. However, there could be exceptions for certain special services such as museum trains or ferries.

The offer does not include journeys on the ICE, EC and IC long-distance trains of Deutsche Bahn or trains from other providers or long-distance buses. Subsequent price increases are not excluded.

In what form is the ticket offered?

Advance sales for the Deutschlandticket, which will be available digitally via a smartphone app or a chip card, are scheduled to start on April 3rd. Initially, it will also be accepted in printed form. However, it is necessary to take out a subscription, which can be canceled on a monthly basis. The ticket is personal and cannot be transferred to other people.

What does the Deutschlandticket app offer?

The “Dein Deutschlandticket” app is expected to be available in the app stores this week, as the developer Mobility Inside announced. The app aims to enable users to subscribe or unsubscribe quickly and easily.

In addition, the app offers the opportunity to link offers such as e-scooter and bike sharing and to buy additional tickets for taking bicycles, local ticket offers or DB long-distance transport in the future. The ticket will also be available in the DB Navigator app and as a chip card in DB sales points and some transport associations.

What happens to existing subscription contracts?

Many transport companies and associations have already announced that existing subscription contracts with terms after May 1st can be automatically converted to the 49-euro ticket. In other cases, however, passengers have to take action themselves to switch their subscription to the new ticket.

Are there any take-away rules?

In contrast to many existing subscription tariffs, there are no rules for taking along with the Deutschlandticket, not even for family members, in the evenings or at weekends. Only children up to six years of age can be taken along free of charge, which is already the case with the train and usually with other means of transport.

However, regional exceptions may apply. In the fare zone of the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association, for example, you are allowed to take a dog with you.

Are there additional offers?

It is planned to create a link between the 49-euro ticket and cheaper job tickets. The federal and state governments agreed that companies would pay five percent less for the ticket if they passed it on to their employees with a discount of at least 25 percent.

Some regions are discussing offering discounts for pupils, students and people who receive social benefits in addition to or as an alternative to the 49-euro ticket. Additional monthly bicycle passes are also being considered. There are also demands for special regulations for families, since according to the previous plans, every family member aged six and over would have to buy their own ticket.

Who benefits how much from the new ticket?

The savings with the 49-euro ticket depend on the individual use of local public transport and the previous ticket offers in the respective region. In metropolitan areas, the previous subscription prices are usually significantly higher than 49 euros, while in rural areas they are often in the three-digit range. Commuters in the environs of large cities and anyone who regularly travels long distances by public transport and who often travels to different places benefit particularly greatly from the offer.

The 49-euro ticket is less attractive for public transport users who already benefit from discounted offers such as social tickets, often use special regulations such as ride-sharing offers, share a ticket or live in a region with poor transport connections. However, the ticket could also quickly offer savings for occasional journeys in rural areas, especially in leisure travel.

Is the ticket finally decided?

The draft law was discussed for the first time by the Bundesrat at the beginning of March. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) aims to complete the legislative process in March. To do this, the Bundesrat would have to approve the bill at its next meeting on March 31, which can still be changed in the Bundestag in the meantime.
