The FDP politician Lambsdorff becomes the new German ambassador in Russia. According to Ukrainian sources, Russia has mined the cooling basin of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. All developments in the live blog.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has promised Ukraine further aid to modernize the country’s military. “During the course of the summit, the allies will adopt a multi-year aid package that will bring Ukraine up to NATO standards,” Stoltenberg told the “Tagesspiegel” with a view to the meeting of the heads of state and government of the 31 member states in July in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius . “With our help, the Ukrainian military should make the transition from an army based on the old Soviet model to a modern military force that works according to NATO standards.”

According to the Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR), the cooling pool for the reactors of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has been mined by Russia. The six-reactor complex, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, has been occupied since shortly after Russia invaded in February last year. “The most frightening thing is that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was also mined during this time – namely the cooling basin,” says GUR boss Kyrylo Budanov, without presenting any evidence. The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The FDP politician Alexander Graf Lambsdorff will be the new German ambassador to Russia. A spokesman for the Foreign Office in Berlin confirmed during the night that the Russian government had given its approval, the so-called agrément, for the personnel. “The start of service is scheduled for this summer,” said the spokesman. Lambsdorff is to succeed Géza Andreas von Geyr, who is currently ambassador to Moscow.

Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine in February, the post has been considered particularly difficult. Lambsdorff is Vice-Chairman of the FDP parliamentary group. Before his career in the FDP, Lambsdorff worked in the Foreign Service and for the Foreign Office from 1995. From 2000 to 2003 he worked in the press department of the German Embassy in Washington DC, from 2003 to 2004 he worked in the Russia department of the Federal Foreign Office. Lambsdorff was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2017, most recently as Vice President.
