How To Change Default Browser On iPhone And iPad

We all have a browser we prefer to use. Some might prefer Google Chrome, some might prefer Firefox, some might prefer Safari. On a computer, it’s easy to change the default browser that you’re using, but if you’re using an iPhone or an iPad, then it might get a bit tricky, or at least it used to.

Prior to iOS 14, Apple did not allow users to change the default browser on their devices. This means that while you can download third-party browsers like Chrome or Firefox, apps that opened links in a browser would automatically default to Safari. You could choose to open it in a different browser, but it was additional steps that you’d have to take which didn’t really make it worth the time and effort.

The good news is that Apple will now allow users to change the default browsers on their iPhones and iPads, and it’s incredibly simple to do, so here’s how you can do it.

Changing Your Default Browser

  1. Launch Settings
  2. Scroll down and look for the browser app that you want to make default
  3. Tap on it
  4. Tap on Default browser app
  5. Tap on the browser of your choice (in this case we’re using Chrome)
  6. You can repeat the steps above if you want to revert back to Safari or change to a different browser

Now whenever you open links sent in emails or chat apps, it should open in Chrome, unless the app uses its own built-in browser. That being said, unlike Android, iOS is still quite limited in terms of default apps that one can set. At the moment users only get to choose setting a default browser or email app, but it is possible that further down the road that Apple will open it up to more apps.
