House of the “Cannibal of Rotenburg” burned down

Armin Meiwes, who has been in prison since 2002, has gone down in history as the “Cannibal of Rotenburg”. Now his former house, in which he killed and ate his victim in front of the camera, went up in flames.

It is a building of questionable fame: the house of Armin Meiwes, who became known as the “Cannibal of Rotenburg”, caught fire during the night. The police said parts of the half-timbered house collapsed as a result of the flames. The officials confirm that it was Meiwes’ house.

According to the police, post-extinguishing work was still being carried out on Monday morning, and embers were found again and again. The fire broke out from an unknown cause. The house in Rotenburg an der Fulda (Hersfeld-Rotenburg district) has been empty for years.

The former resident of the house is in custody for murder and disturbing the peace of the dead. In 2001, the computer technician killed a Berlin engineer in front of the camera, disassembled it and ate parts of the corpse. He kept the meat in the freezer and later ate some of it.

“Meiwes shows no processing of the crime”

Since the willing victim had voluntarily placed himself in the hands of the perpetrator, who was driven by cannibalistic fantasies, the district court classified the horrible act in the first trial as manslaughter. From the point of view of the federal prosecutor, the Kassel judges should have recognized murder for base motives. Only later did the Federal Court of Justice overturn the verdict after the public prosecutor’s office had appealed and imposed the maximum sentence.

Meiwes was arrested in December 2002. He found a new job in the library in Kassel prison. From the point of view of experts, the Rotenburg cannibal is still a danger to the general public. An investigator told the “Bild” newspaper several years ago: “Armin Meiwes shows no kind of processing of the crime in detention. He has a special need for recognition, shows no guilt. And he feels confirmed in his position that he hasn’t done anything wrong. ” The police could not say whether he officially still owns the house.
