The German women’s national ice hockey team narrowly wins against Hungary at the World Cup – and celebrates a great success: Reaching the quarter-finals. The big favorite is waiting there. The minimum target had already been achieved.
Germany’s ice hockey women surprisingly reached the quarterfinals at the World Championships in Canada. On Tuesday, the team of national coach Thomas Schädler won 2:1 (2:0, 0:1, 0:0) against Hungary at the end of the preliminary round and will now meet the top favorites USA on Thursday (7.30 p.m. / MagentaSport). The Americans have won three of their four preliminary round games, losing to holders Canada after extra time.
With their goals in Brampton, Ronja Hark (11th minute) and Nicola Eisenschmid (20th) ensured the third preliminary round victory in the fourth game. Hungary was only successful through Reka Dabasi (21st) shortly after the start of the middle section. University of Providence, Rhode Island, goaltender Sandra Abstreiter clinched the narrow victory with 36 saves.
Germany had previously beaten Sweden (6-2) and France (3-0) and only lost to Finland (0-3). Due to the victory, the German team can no longer be pushed out of second place in group B of the preliminary round.
Staying in the league is almost more important than reaching the quarter-finals, where Germany is a blatant outsider on Thursday – the declared goal at this World Cup. There had previously been doubts about structural problems in German women’s ice hockey. But the German team had already achieved the minimum goal by beating France 3-0. A draw against Hungary would have been enough for the team, which had only just avoided relegation in fourth place in their group at the 2022 World Cup.
