Dhe small world of top gastronomy has a new number one. That’s to be expected, as three years ago the organizers of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, an annual award, decided that a restaurant could only take first place on their list once. After that, all first place finishers are taken out of the competition and find themselves in a kind of Hall of Fame out of competition.

At this year’s award ceremony in Valencia, the “Central” in the Peruvian capital Lima was declared the supposedly best restaurant in the world. The youthful-looking Virgilio Martinéz, who has repeatedly landed in the top 10 of the extremely influential ranking in previous years, acts as the host and chef de cuisine.

And yet, the title “best restaurant in the world” raises a number of questions that come to mind given the enormous influence and financial impact of the seemingly absurd superlative. On the one hand, there is the proud price
