Sure, iOS has a much smaller market share compared to Google’s Android platform, so some of you might be wondering why developers still tend to flock to iOS first. Turns out that Apple’s iOS platform is a much more lucrative one compared to Android, or at least that’s what the data from Sensor Tower seems to suggest.
According to the data, it seems that in terms of subscription-based apps, Apple’s App Store managed to pull in a whopping $10.3 billion in 2020 alone. This is a 32% increase from the previous year where Apple made $7.8 billion. Google’s Android saw a 42% increase, which is more than Apple, but the total spent in 2020 for Android was at $2.7 billion.
This means that the Apple App Store’s revenue from subscriptions is nearly quadruple that of Android, which like we said, presents a much more lucrative option for developers who are hoping to make some serious bucks. Also these numbers seem to corroborate reports from 2020 in which it was suggested that Apple was making bank from the App Store during the pandemic as people were looking for new things to do now that they couldn’t go out and socialize like they normally would.
That being said, the overall increase in subscription revenue also suggests that this is the new direction that companies should be moving towards, versus one-off purchases that used to be the previous model.
