One of the most popular types of devices in the IoT ecosystems these days are smart plugs. They are essentially an extension placed over your regular plug point that will make it “smart” and controllable remotely, either through an app or through a smart home assistant like Alexa. Amazon, the makers of Alexa, has now released their own smart plug in India for Rs. 1999.

The smart plug uses a standard 3-pin Indian socket design, with a 6A power rating and a state retention feature. To set it up, users can simply plug in the smart plug, open the Alexa app and connect it. Once set up, the smart plug is attached to your Amazon account, which means you can control the plug via voice on any Echo speaker or other Alexa compatible device.

Amazon offers a few options to users, such as the ability to create schedules that can help automate the turn ON/OFF times of connected appliances. To set them up, users can navigate to the “Routines” options in the Alexa app.

The Amazon smart plug is priced at Rs. 1999 and is available at Amazon and in offline retail stores such as Croma and Reliance Digital.

Commenting on the launch, Parag Gupta, Head of Amazon Devices, India said:

Setting up and controlling smart home should not require technology savviness. Customers in India are increasingly experimenting with home automation and we want them to have simple yet affordable solutions to make their existing appliances smart using Alexa. With Amazon Smart Plug, customers can add smart voice control to any appliance without the need to upgrade it
